I'm never going to look at you like you're crazy, Miss Iris. I've been on the other side of that equation and I know what it's like for people to think you're crazy or stupid. I know cynicism is all the rage--and justifiably so in many cases--but I can't live that way. I have to believe in the power of the human spirit otherwise what's the point?

It's true, I wouldn't be here if I wasn't getting something out of it, something more than the satisfaction of helping someone. I've got a son back home for whom I am financially responsible, and I couldn't just leave that responsibility behind without good reason. I see this as a win-win situation--I get to do something important and provide something for him I couldn't otherwise.
